Columbia College Chicago junior Marketing major Cassie Pihera was drawn to Columbia for its “location, diversity, and opportunities within the business and entrepreneurship program,” as she puts it. She has since discovered all this and more as her career continues to flourish.
Originally from Geneva, Illinois, and a graduate of Geneva Community High School, Cassie has always had a deep love and appreciation for music. This passion brought her to Columbia, where she has become a key contributor to the success of Sessions @33, a volunteer music series that provides students with hands-on experience in fields like film, audio, music business, fashion, photography, and more. Cassie’s role has evolved from filming and managing social media to coordinating events like a recent Halloween “live” event at Bassline Chicago.
Cassie credits her work with Sessions @33, internships, and coursework with giving her the confidence to succeed. “When I came to Columbia, I knew I wanted to work in music, but it was nerve-wracking to pursue a field that was unfamiliar to everyone in my family. After being involved with Sessions @33 and gaining internship experience, I have a clearer vision for my career and the confidence that I can succeed, thanks to the hard work I’ve put in so far.”
Now midway through her junior year, Cassie is clear on what she loves most about Columbia. “My favorite part of Columbia is all the opportunities I’ve found through faculty and friends. Some highlights include helping film for Noah Floersch, co-managing a band called Sweet Hudson, joining GrammyU, and working for Live Nation!”
Cassie has also become instrumental in recruiting future students to Columbia. As a Student Ambassador for Columbia’s Welcome Center, she offers advice for incoming students. “When families ask for advice during tours, I always say: Get involved. Go to local concerts with friends, join campus clubs, and talk to classmates. I didn’t put in the effort to make college enjoyable at first, but after this past spring semester, I’ve jumped at every fun opportunity. Now I’m having a blast!”
