Senior Music Business major at Columbia College Chicago, Hailey Carmean, is making her mark in the industry by leveraging a well-rounded curriculum and taking advantage of incredible opportunities outside the classroom—experiences that have fueled her confidence and success.
Growing up in South Bloomfield, Ohio, and attending Teays Valley High School, Hailey found Columbia met many of her goals. “I was drawn to Columbia because I’d heard great things about the Music Business major, and I loved its location in downtown Chicago,” she explains. That passion for the school, the courses, and extracurriculars has stayed strong throughout her journey as a student.
Early on, before internships and artist management roles, Hailey gained valuable skills volunteering for Sessions @33, a student-led music program. “Sessions @33 was the first project I started at Columbia, and it truly opened doors for me. I met and worked with incredible, talented people from different majors, which prepared me for other projects and internships,” she shares. Her current internship with Wasserman has given her a firsthand look at the music industry’s day-to-day operations and introduced her to career paths she hadn’t previously considered.
As she enters her final two semesters, Hailey credits conversations with professors, involvement in student projects, internships, and regular meetings with her career advisor as keys to her success. She offers this advice to incoming students: “Take as many opportunities as possible! As a freshman, it’s hard to land internships or jobs right away, but I got my start by meeting with my career advisor and asking for help.”
